ECS Commissioners provide leadership for ECS initiatives as well
as for their states' education agenda. Because they understand the
substance of education issues and the process and politics of change,
they can help bridge the gap between good ideas and effective education
policy. ECS commissioners can contribute to productive dialogue
and collaborative activities between educators and policymakers
as they work with ECS to create a climate for change and improvement
in public education.
As an ECS Commissioner, you have the opportunity to:
| Work with key political and education leaders
in your state and with ECS staff to develop and support a coherent
state strategy for education reform |
| Promote productive relationships between state
policymakers and the education community at the stateand local
levels |
| Help shape ECS priorities |
|
Develop affiliations with national education and political
organizations such as the National Governors' Association,
the National Conference of state Legislatures and the Council
of Chief State School Officers
|
| Participate in the design and implementation of
a statewide communications strategy - including media interviews,
public forums and op-eds - to strengthen public understanding
of and support for education change and improvement |
| Distribute ECS publications and reports to key
individuals and audiences |
| Participate as an ECS representative in national
forums, seminars and meetings sponsored by ECS and other organizations
|
| Serve on advisory committees for ECS projects,
programs and initiatives |
| Help respond to requests (from ECS staff and commissioners)
for information about education policies, practices and issues
in your state |
|
Help advise appointing authorities in your state (the governor
